The use of a backdrop file brought new capabilities to EPANET. However, how do I create this
file? how big this image can be? Is it already georeferenced? How about using an aerial photo
or satellite image as a background?
What would you say, if you were told that you could access satellite images for the whole World
and use them as a backdrop for EPANET, just by clicking a button?... I would say EPANET-Z.
EPANET 2.00.12 (3/5/08) was modified and re-compiled to display Online Maps/imagery as a
background. EPANET-Z = EPANET + Online Maps (Yahoo Maps, Google Maps, Virtual Earth)
Epanet Z is a beta freeware tool.
This program doesn't need to be installed,
just unzipped and run it.
Epanet-Z.zip contains the executable file
(Epanet-Z.exe), the epanet2.dll library and
one example file (EpanetZ_example.net)
Feel free to report any bugs/comments!
This first release will only display online-maps when the map units are degrees. For
meters and feet units, a projection system is required and the EPANET format file (NET and
INP) does not support this information. Instead of creating my own modified format (and
incompatible with the official version) I will wait for a while and see what you suggest.
New controls added to the interface:
April 26, 2008
- Services were not reverse engineered
- Images are accessed using their respective API's
- Images are served by a browser
- Images are never saved
- Images are never modified
- Copyright labels are always intact
EPANET-Z is just a customized Internet browser
accesing specific webpages.
